In a roadblock to the much-awaited Paradip-Haridaspur railway line project, residents of Nuagaon staged ‘rail roko’ during an experimental trial run of a goods train on the route demanding passenger train services on Friday. The goods train was the first to roll out on the soil of the Kendrapara district.
The agitators led by local sarpanch Binati Das halted a coal-laden goods train, which was on way to Rourkela from Paradip, near Nuagaon railway station at 11.30 am. They demanded a written assurance from the railway officials in this regard.
“The railway authorities

acquired our land to build the line for both goods and passenger trains. However, only goods trains are being run on the route due to which we decided to stage protest,” said Madan Behera of Nuagaon.
Nuagaon station manager Babuli Charan Mallick admitted that the goods train was stopped by villagers during the trial run. The protestors also hoisted banners when the train was passing through the station. Chief Public Relations Officer of East Coast Railway Nirakar Das said, due to the protest, the testing of the new railway line has been delayed.
Sources said Railway officials and the district administration are holding discussions with the agitators to resolve the matter. Security has been tightened at Nuagaon and nearby areas to check any untoward incident.
Recently, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had urged the Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal to start passenger trains on the railway line.
Construction work of the 82-km long railway line from Haridaspur to the port town of Paradip covering Jajpur, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts was completed recently. The railway line has brought Kendrapara on the railway map.
The then Railway Minister Nitish Kumar had laid foundation stone of the project on April 4, 1999, near Marshaghai in the district.

Wary passengers who logged on to the Indian Railways booking website today morning expecting a jump in ticket prices were in for a pleasant surprise. Fares of premier trains like the Rajdhani and the Shatabdi remained largely unchanged despite dynamic pricing being enforced from today.
According to the railways' new rule on surge pricing, passengers travelling by premier trains including Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi now pay between 10 to 50 per cent more for their tickets. The new pricing rule only applies on passengers travelling in AC-2 tier and 3 AC coaches.

bookings opened at 8:00 AM today morning, the fare for a 3AC ticket from Mumbai to New Delhi on the Rajdhani remained Rs. 2125. Even as the seats got quickly filled, the price remained unchanged. Even when less than 30 per cent of the total seats remained, there was no change in the price.
Travel agents remained clueless about how dynamic pricing would affect passengers on the first day of what the railways clarified was only an 'experiment'.
On Thursday, Indian Railways said that the flexi-fare system would be closely monitored to study its impact. The scheme is being run on a trial basis as the railways' struggles to turn around its operations after running losses for three straight years.
Experts say that the new system would be more transparent and effective that a flat increase in fares if needed. They point out that the railways have a monopoly, and given the high demand for tickets, passengers would pay higher fares in absence of alternatives.
However the introduction of dynamic pricing met with strong criticism from political parties including the Congress. Under pressure, Railway Board chairman AK Mittal said the dynamic fare system was not a permanent feature and it would be reviewed after some time.

However, a token allotment of Rs one lakh has been made for 12-km Cuttack-Barang doubling project. An allocation of Rs 12.5 crore has been made for Brundamal-Jharsuguda fly over for joining downline while Rs 10 crore has been allocated for Khurda Road-Vizianagaram bypass.
The East-West rail corridor will connect Odisha through Bondamunda-Rourkela-Jharsuguda and Brajrajnagar stations while the East Coast Rail Corridor will connect Odisha through Jaleswar-Balasore-Bhadrak-Cuttack-Bhubaneswar-Khurda Road-Berhampur stations. Yes. This doubling will surely boost up the Mumbai-Pune-Goa-Hubbli-Bangalore connectivity and travel time will also reduced very much.
This doubling will surely hamper the business of those bus owners who ply buses between Mumbai/Pune to Bangalore.
